Eliza Farnham said, "The ultimate aim of the human mind, in all its efforts, is to become acquainted with truth." 'Truth' is unshakeable. It is unquestionable and absolute. You cannot deny or run away from 'Truth'. It is not open to the reasoning, arguments or the interpretations of the human mind. As Eliza so precisely puts it, it is solely something to be acquainted with, something to be searched for by honest and sincere hearts, to be accepted and cherished in its finality.
It is a new philosophy of the world that tells all men to create their own truth. And so we have manipulated and twisted truth to meet our own ends. 'To each his own', we say. We seem to think that truth is relative, a self-proclaimed philosophy that is up to each man to create and adopt. But truth is not for man to create, it already exists. It is only for man to search for, to find and to embrace.
A little child believes in the tale of Santa Claus, that he brings her gifts every Christmas and we think it sweet and endearing. But if a grown man believes this fairytale, we would call him a fool and a madman. Why? Because we know that it is not true. We expect an adult to be sensible and mature enough to differentiate between fact and fiction, to understand reality. So reality is truth and each man has a responsibility to sincerely and wholeheartedly search for truth.
And what truth is of greater importance and significance than the truth of life, of our existence and death. For from this truth, all others flow. Without finding this truth, everything is meaningless. It is the key that unlocks the meaning of life.
And so man created religion. He said that they all worshipped the same God. He created philosophies, ideologies and worldviews. He said that all roads lead to the same destination. He forgot however, to value truth. He still underestimates the absolute power of truth. For when man's pitiful creations crash to dust, the truth will remain. The truth is eternal.
And how do we find the truth? Perhaps it is waiting to reveal itself to the one who seeks with all his heart. Perhaps, the answers are around us, in the miracle of our being, in the wonders of nature, in the mysteries of the universe. Are they not all plainly witnessing the wisdom and glory of their Creator? And will not the Creator answer a searching heart?
Similarly significant in the search for truth, is the universal law of morality that is written in the hearts of men; An inborn and objective consciousness or knowledge of right and wrong which sets us apart from all other creatures. Something which gives us responsibility and an awareness of a higher calling. A calling that is our responsibility to answer.
So also, eternity has been put into our hearts. We instinctively know that our souls will continue to exist after death, that we are immortal. If so, why do we live as if there is nothing past death? Why do we toil and labour to secure our lives on earth while the whole of eternity lies in uncertainty? Should we not give thought to what awaits us after death? We tell children that they must work hard at school to prepare for the future. Then what fools are we if we give no thought or concern to the future that is eternity!
Somebody once said, "The truth is the truth even if no one believes it, a lie is a lie, even if everyone believes it." Man cannot afford to overlook or despise the truth. For with the truth lies the meaning of existence and the course of our destiny, now and for eternity. Let us then earnestly search for the truth. For the truth will save us, it will set us free.
